Blonde, pink, green, you name it. For this post I wanna focus focus on our brown-haired brunette-flavored gals. Just to prove you don’t need a whacky hair color to be waifu material.
40. Ringo
Anime: Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (Daily Lives of High School Boys) I like to think of Ringo as the tsundere-lite edition character. She’s usually very chipper but gets really competitive when going up against the guys, and let’s just say she is not a gracious loser. When the guys deceive her in any way or slightly step on her toes odds are they are getting punched in the gut with the force of a late game Sakura. She’s somewhat trope heavy, as the slightest meow or the mention of food will completely distract her. But it adds to her somewhat air-headed charm.
39. Izumi Akazawa
Anime: Another With Izumi you love her or hate her, I think it’s obvious which camp I fall under. Okay she might not be the nicest. But she gets stuff done her way! She takes initiative in finding the extra and ending the calamity. Also she’s a slight tsundere, which you’ll find is a major plus on this list. The fact that she’s also fairy humble and accepts her faults is like the icing on the cake.
38. Rinka Hayami
Anime: Assassination Classroom Her nickname is the tsundere sniper, come on that just buzzes with hype. She and her partner-in-crime are the adults of the group, usually staying reserved and serious. But she is beyond reliable. And is, in my opinion, one of the best assets the class has. Sure Nagisa has the thunder clap and Karma can easily steal your girl. But long range is overpowered and Rinka looks adorable when holding a kitten.
37. Chisato Higuchi
Anime: Asobi Asobase Chisato is the most awkward, shy cookie cutie I have seen in a while. Pro number 1, she absolutely rocks that short hair. Even though the girls tease her about it. Pro number 2, she’s a very down to earth person, being willing to play along with the girls and act more like a friend than a teacher. Pro number 3, she’s definitely available and seems like the ideal late game wife. No cons? Case closed.
36. Nadeko Sengoku
Anime: Bakemonogatari Nadeko can scratch two of your itches depending on what part of the series you are on; so spoilers ahead. At the beginning she’s the classic dandere: cute, shy, fumbles around with her words and has the heart of an angel. But then she has an Orichimaru phase and falls straight into yandere territory. So if you want a snuggle buddy or a boa constrictor, Nadeko is the gal for you.
35. Naru Kotoishi
Anime: Barakamon In my humble opinion, Naru is one of the best written child characters in anime, ever. She’s just beyond precious, always buzzing around and trying to make everyone happy. She seemed like a nuisance at the very beginning to the protagonist. But let’s be honest, she was a fan favorite 10 seconds into her introduction. You add to that the fact that she teaches Handa how to color outside of the lines and you get an A list character.
34. Kayo Hinazuki
Anime: Erased With anime girls, I often hear the statement “We have to protect her smile” and Kayo is exactly that kind of a character. Representing the kuudere gang she’s usually very indifferent, but that only makes her occasional smile or blush that much more precious! Although it could be argued that the killer was more committed to a certain relationship than she was, I still think that she deserves a spot.
33. Ayumi Otosaka
Anime: Charlotte She is the perfect little sister and don’t you dare say otherwise. Besides being the cutest thing to have grazed the Charlotte universe, she’s also very mature for her age. I mean, I didn’t know how to cook at that age. Or how to destroy a building for that matter. She’s also one of us, as she shipped Nao and Yuu from the very beginning. Her pout game is on point and the face she makes when she gets under Yuu’s skin is just priceless. So sticks and stones may break my bones, but don’t give scalpels to children.
32. Chisa Kotegawa
Anime: Grand Blue Amidst all of the naked, drunk, titan-looking, loud mouth guys in the show Chisa looks as tame as a lamb. But not the shy kind of tame but more of the responsible adult type of tame. And what can I say, it simply works. Distancing herself from the shenanigans as well as getting Iori into trouble from time to time make her a force to be reckoned with. Like the final boss of the underwater waifu wars. I do also think it needs to be pointed out how “family friendly” her cousins are… but hey that’s the way the news goes in anime.
31. Chiho Sasaki
Anime: Devil as a Part Timer Okay let’s get this out of the way: the only true ship in this show would be Sadao and Shirou. But Chiho is a strong contender nevertheless! She’s very lovable as she falls head over heels for Sadao, and spends most of the show balling over the demon spawn in a very adorable way. She’s quite clumsy, as she constantly drops things, especially the fries. But can you blame her? If I had double cheese burgers like she does, I’m sure balance would be an issue. Misses flatbread Emilia also gets jealous around her, making for some splendid quarrels as well.
30. Rei Batsubami
Anime: Kakegurui Saying that Rei is slightly unstable seems unnecessary, considering no one in Kakegurui is particularly sane. But I like what they did with her character. Firstly, because she pulled a Clark Kent and changed her identity but taking of her glasses, a classic move. And secondly, because she moved on after the bidding fiasco, shook free from her past and the chains that were holding her down. She’s also extremely cute, but that might just be me.
29. Momozono Nanami
Anime: Kamisama Kiss “Although she might be a weak human, she has a strong soul” is the general opinion about Nanami. Landing herself the position of a land god as well as a foxy boy, she tries to use her position in order to unite yokai and humans. She even catfished her friend in that pursuit. Nanami is very stubborn and is the type that would rather die than beg for help, making her interactions with her familiar very loud… but also funny.
28. Satomi Murano
Anime: Parasyte Satomi and Shinichi are like a beauty and the beast story. Because of our handyman Migi, Shinichi can’t really seem to avoid trouble and constantly has to fend for his life. As you might imagine, this has made him a moody and paranoid feller. He also has to keep it a secret from Satomi, his future love interest to be. But does that stop Satomi? Almost, but not really! She is the type of character that always has your back and can teach you the important lessons in life while at your side. Like that you burry dead puppies, not throw them in the trash.
27. Aoi Hinata
Anime: ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me? What better way to start the day than by having the breath knocked out of your lungs? This is the life of Jouro, as whenever Himawari happens to see him, she just can’t help herself. And for such a small girl she packs quite the punch… being the tennis club ace and all. She is Jouro’s childhood friend. Which as we all know is a pretty common trope, so Jouro does his best to throw his nice guy ™ tactics at her. But Himawari is so busy jumping up and down the wall that she takes little notice of his intentions, or his true personality. She’s definitely the bubbliest person in the group and is, in my opinion, the cutest.
26. Chisato Mera
Anime: Saiki K I usually don’t like one note characters but Mera is an exception. Her main shtick is that she does not have money. And will therefore take any opportunity to work and eat whatever she is given. And I literally mean everything, she went ultra vegan at one point and just ate straight grass. Her intentions are noble, however, she just wants to help out her family and make sure her siblings have food on the table. And if I’m being honest, if they made a Survivor type anime I would bet all my money on Mera. She’s like Bear Grylls with a shorter fuse and faultier communication skills.
25. Aina Kuronuma
Anime: Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto If Aina was from a different show I probably wouldn’t have liked her as much. Yet here we are! She’s the usual femme fatale that has every boy drooling over her, and girls wishing they would get the Krillin treatment. But paired up with Sakamoto, things become a lot more interesting. Firstly, we see that she is not just good looks, as most of her flirtation methods are premeditated and kind of brilliant. Sakamoto, of course, cares very little about her brilliance and keeps being the god that he is, leaving her flustered. And flustered brunettes are always a win in my book.
24. Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakova
Anime: Youjo Senki Everyone in the show always comments on how Tanya is the perfect soldier. But hello, Viktoriya is just as good! She might not be as overpowered as blonde Hitler over here. But she gets the job done! She has protected Tanya when she was in a pinch, and is probably her most loyal soldier. But her glow-up is what is most impressive; she went from whimpering around to sleeping like a lamb hours before a major battle. The girl has some nerves of steel. She’s also one of the few chipper characters, which just further shows her mental strength.
23. Hakaze Kusaribe
Anime: Zetsuen no Tempest Very often a character loses a lot of what made them awesome after falling in love. But thankfully that’s not the case with Hakaze. At the beginning she gave off a strong Erza vibe. You know, the strong independent woman who despite the predicament she was in found a way to get out and fight her fight. But even after she falls in love with a certain pseudo-psychopath, she is still extremely believable and likable. This gal is aware of the influence that person has on her, and acts accordingly. I just can’t help but compliment good character writing in this case.
22. Sasha Braus
Anime: Attack on Titan This show is dark as it is, but imagine if Sasha was a titan; she would probably eat the entire cast in the pilot. Nicknamed Potato girl, Sasha is just a glutton for punishment, and meat, and potatoes. She will gladly steal food if necessary, and will bite your hand off if you try to take it away from her. The reason I like her so much is that she’s refreshing, with the cast containing a crybaby, a kuudere, a smart crybaby, a horse man, personified edge and sex appeal and so on… it’s good to have at least one comic relief character. She hasn’t really solo’d any titans yet. But if she ever finds them tasty looking it’s game over.
21. Maki Oze
Anime: Fire Force Maki is 50% badass and 50% absolute love-struck goofball. As an ex-soldier, she can handle her own in any fight, making short work of even third-generation pyrokinetics. She also has one of the most interesting powers in the show, no matter how odd the names of her fire buddies might be. But on the other hand, any mention of romance has her foaming at the mouth. She hates thinking about true love, fate, you know that mushy stuff. So she definitely has more than one attribute to her name. Atop of all that she’s just cute as all hell, making her top tier wifey material.
20. Naho Takamiya
Anime: Orange Naho is like the dandere success story. At first she really couldn’t speak her mind all that much, especially in regards to romantic feelings. Plus she was pretty oblivious to other people’s emotions. But through some time travel shenanigans we see Naho glow up, at least to an extent. On the certain day that could have had her sing “How to save a life” she stepped up to the plate and went outside of her comfort zone. I really like Naho; she is an absolute sweetheart and Orange as a show is one of the better romances you can find.
19. Mirai Kuriyama
Anime: Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary) It is time for d-d-d-dandere love! Mirai is an extremely shy girl who although a Spirit World Warrior trembles at the thought of meeting a Youmu. So the usual career path of slaying them is no less than “unpleasant” for poor Mirai. Speaking of poor, Mirai was forced into a very self-sufficient lifestyle, having to earn money herself to put bread on the table. This makes her very determined and willing to do some things she might not be too thrilled about. Overall, she’s a very clumsy and admirable character that you can’t help but root for.
18. Megumi Noda
Anime: Nodame Cantabile Breaking up with Megumi is probably the most painful death wish one can have. She’s a very talented pianist, no doubt, but she’s also extremely unpredictable and unconventional when it comes to expressing herself. She might have the odd fit of pervertedness here and there, or an amazing jump kick. But at the end of the day it’s all out of love, right? Her backstory may not be the happiest. But it is a joy watching her influence Chiaki and slowly remove the stick out of his behind.
17. Kosaki Onodera
Anime: Nisekoi There’s a reason why Kosaki and her family specialize in candies: because they’re such sweethearts. Too corny? Overall Kosaki leans heavily towards the dandere camp, which as we all know makes for some of the best waifus. She has a lot of trouble expressing herself and lacks a bit of self-confidence. This is why every scene where her mother is present, who went to the other side of the spectrum and is eccentric as all hell, is particularly enjoyable.
16. Ayumu Kasuga
Anime: Azumanga Daioh Was I the only one who didn’t know about the Osaka stereotype? Is that really a thing? In the universe of Azumanga Daioh it is. And let’s just say Ayumu is as far from it as you can get. Instead of a loud and energetic Osakan, the class she transferred to got a knock off Dorothy Unsworth. Ayumi is seemingly always spaced out, more focused on her visions of demonic pony tails or riddles than on the real world. She is quite sharp, as she’s the biggest reality check for the group. But also can’t be bothered to excel in school.
15. Haruhi Fujioka
Anime: Ouran Koukou Host Club Two bros chilling in a fountain, five feet away because one of them is a woman. Well she’s biologically a woman, but she personally doesn’t care much for gender and would rather be judged based on her actions. She has some amazing conversation skills, as she doesn’t beat around the bush. Nor does she throw cheesy pick-up lines, making her an amazing host. Paired with Tamaki these two make a slick comedy duo!
14. Mikoto Misaka
Anime: A Certain Magical Index Can we all just agree that Misaka and Touma are an amazing ship? Granted, at first Misaka didn’t seem like much, just a side character. But as she got more of the spotlight their relationship became more interesting. She’s a tsundere, and a powerful one at that. Being a level 5 esper her mood swings are definitely ones to be feared, as she will zap you to the shadow realm. Especially if you take pictures with her mother, TOUMA.
13. Megumin
Anime: KonoSuba I’m extremely biased with this one as KonoSuba is one of my favorite shows. And Megumin is one of my favorite characters from the show. The little eccentric wizard girl that’s just really into blowing stuff up never seems to get dull. Her little troll face is on par with Ayumi, and her cat is definitely a normal cat. Her relationship with Kazuma is also very cute, as they seem like pals more than anything else, with the occasional advance from Kazuma during certain cold nights. I generally seldom like it when a character seems too perfect. So the immature, trigger happy, slime-covered Megumin is right up my alley.
12. Nana Komatsu
Anime: Nana This show has broken me several times and I’m okay with it. Also vague spoilers ahead. Hachi as a character is really something, starting off as a generic and naïve person that seemingly only juxtaposes the other Nana. But then the show goes on and she gets more complex, maybe less lovable, but a lot more believable. Besides proving that nice guys finish last, her character also showcases some very interesting vulnerabilities and what it can take for a person to feel fulfilled. Also if you have not watched the show I strongly recommend it! Believe me, it has the widest range of best boys I have ever seen.
11. Diane
Anime: Seven Deadly Sins Diane has that double-edged sword likability as she is as sweet as sugar, but can also crush you with no real effort. Males everywhere must also applaud her for seemingly only picking short kings as her crushes, given that everyone is short for her but you get the point. I especially like what they did with her character later on in the show when she started dancing to enhance her combat. It just gave her a terrifying elegance and I can definitely see why Drole predicted she would become a great ruler of the giants. And of course, that brunette hair.
10. Misaki Nakahara
Anime: Welcome to the N.H.K. Misaki also falls into the category of extremely nice, but out of realistic reasons. At first it just seemed like she was helping Satou out of the goodness of her heart, which I personally wasn’t a big fan of. But then we get to learn about the inner workings of her mind. And she becomes painfully realistic. She is a good person, sure. She singlehandedly made Satou improve as a person and even made him sincerely care for his friends. But it was initially a selfish act, so it kinda… well enough analyzing. Misaki is just a friend worth having, a reliable person with unlimited patience, and the resolve to see her plans progress.
9. Ochaco Uraraka
Anime: Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) The question of whether you ship Uraraka with Bakugo or Deku should honestly be considered a personality test. Uraraka is a hard working girl trying to help out her folks, while also saving some people. Her quirk is pretty versatile and can pack quite the punch when used properly. Heck, even Bakugo took her seriously. But above all, watching her squirm around Deku while he proceeds to do the same is that wholesome material we all need in our life.
8. Cana Alberona
Anime: Fairy Tail The fateful student of the school of Bacchus, Cana, always seems to have a drink in hand. Drink referring to the entire barrel, of course. Adding to it her slight daddy issues, I can shamefully admit, same girl. She does harbor a lot of ambition, however, striving to be an S class mage. Sometimes even to a worrying degree. This is why when she’s sober and serious, she acts as the leader of the guild. Especially in a time of crisis. On a side note, her fighting style gives off mad Twisted Fate vibes.
7. Haruhi Suzumiya
Anime: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) Haruhi is without a doubt a handful. She’s very demanding, assertive, and strangely good at undressing other women. Which is not so rare in the anime community. Her ‘specific’ situation on the other hand, is an entirely different thing. She has a loyal fanbase because she’s cute beyond belief. And her rare genuine moments pull at the heart strings and make Haruhi Bible sales go through the roof.
6. Raphtalia
Anime: The Rising of the Shield Hero Man, people really glossed over the whole slavery thing once a cute anime girl resulted from it. Raphtalia had the ideal moe character development, going from a child who Naofumi takes care of to an adult that can take care of Naofumi. But she still kept a great deal of her childlike behavior. So now not only is she cute, but she’s also deadly and reliable. Nice combo. And when Filo comes into the picture we can see her more flirtatious and mature side.
5. Ryouko Ookami
Anime: Okami-san and Her Seven Companions On her own, Ryouko is a pretty cookie cutter tsundere. She punches her feelings away. But when paired with a dandere, she becomes a lot more interesting. Her and Ryoshi make for an interesting couple. When they’re together, Ryoshi can become a pure badass and Ryouko can show her softer side. She’s an all-around boss babe. Her boxing skills allow her to make short work out of attackers, while also slightly justifying why punching is her main tool for communication.
4. Mako Mankanshoku
Anime: Kill la Kill Kill la Kill as a show is hilarious. But also the most nonsensical, random comedy you can find. And no one encapsulates that feeling more than Mako. She’s pure chaotic good, constantly doing something and spilling everything that is on her mind, no matter how goofy it may be. She just seems like that friend that could burn your house down and you still couldn’t be mad at them, because of how darn pure and innocent they seem. Even Gamagori grew to like Mako, quite a bit in fact. So she might brand herself as an underachiever. But I honestly think she’s one of the funniest and most innocent characters in the show and in anime in general, and arguably a best girl if we’re talking brown hair.
3. San
Anime: Princess Mononoke San has to be one of the biggest badasses to have ever been written in anime. She rides a wolf for god’s sake. From her introduction, we could already see that she was a force to be reckoned with. She literally didn’t fear death itself, as much as she feared the destruction of her home. So maybe she’s a bit crazy, but still incredible. Of course, she isn’t all fangs. She does have a more sensitive and caring side, but honestly I will always see her as a badass.
2. Yui Hirasawa
Anime: K-On! Yui is the type of character that you just want to roll up in a blanket and keep at your side forever. Like, she is such a little goofball, always bursting with positive energy and fueled by the power of sugar. It’s like trapping the innocence of an 8 year old inside a teenager’s body. She’s very laid back, as she doesn’t care much for school. But also can’t be bothered to have stage fright either. Her multitasking game might be near zero, but at least when she focuses on one thing, she can perfect it.
1. Holo
Anime: Spice and Wolf If Raphtalia is the anime, then Holo is definitely the manga. From the brown hair to the animal ears and tail, she’s incredible. I do think that Holo is a bit more refined; she’s a very proud wolf-spirit-girl who doesn’t really need to be saved. And she carries a lot of spunk with her, constantly jabbing Lawrence in a very playful way. Also as an avid sub army soldier, I must admit the dub is really good as well. Holo being slightly British was an amazing choice for her somewhat pompous attitude.
